Work is about to begin the important safety upgrade of the central barrier between the M42 junction 3 and junction 3a, and M42 junction 3a to M40 junction 16.
The conversion of the 7.5-mile barrier, from steel to concrete, will begin at the start of next month and is scheduled to be complete by Spring 2024. The outer lane will be closed to create a safe space for those working on the network. Three lanes will remain open for traffic, although narrowed slightly by about 50cm. To offer additional safety, those lanes will be covered by CCTV and there will be a free recovery service for any vehicles that have broken down.
Motorists are advised to check before they travel because there will be a series of diversions to steer motorists away from the full carriageway closures required. These will take place at night, between 9pm and 6am. The diversions will be ‘clearly signposted and checked regularly’.
