The Committee of ‘Knowle Astro’ is looking forward to an exciting 2026, which will see the 25th anniversary of the formation of that society. As a special event, on the actual anniversary of their first meeting in March of 2001, the Chairman and founder member of ‘Knowle Astro’, Mark Wright has arranged for an extra special speaker to come and deliver a talk to that society at Dorridge Village Hall.
Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, while conducting research for her doctorate, discovered the first radio pulsars in 1967! This discovery later earned the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1974 but, controversially, she was not among the awardees. Since then, she has received virtually every other accolade in the world of physics including:
- being elected President of the Royal Astronomical Society from 2002 to 2004;
- President of the Institute of Physics from October 2008 until October 2010;
- Chancellor of the University of Dundee from 2018 to 2023.
In 2018, she was awarded the Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, using the $3 million prize money to establish a fund to help female, minority and refugee students to become research physicists. Truly inspirational!
Dame Jocelyn’s talk is entitled ‘We are made of Star Stuff’ and, we hope you agree, it will be a talk not to be missed!
Due to the size of the hall seats are limited, hence we are using ‘eventbright’ to manage the ticket sales.
Please click ASAP on the Get tickets box to order your tickets.
Please feel free to forward this email to friends who you think would like to attend Dame Jocelyn’s talk on
