WW1 Knowle soldier to get a War Graves headstone after research by The Knowle Society

Alfred George Barber – Our Alfie (27 Jan 1899 – 30 May 1919)

After 95 years of lying in an unmarked grave, Alfie will have the recognition he so deserves and will have the appropriate Commonwealth War Grave headstone. After research and correspondence between the Local History team of The Knowle Society and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, the Commission responded on 11th November 2014 (a poignant date for such a letter) saying “Gunner Alfred George Barber (836287) qualifies for commemoration by the CWGC under the Death attributable to Service criterion. The date for this headstone provision is not yet known but will be advised here and in the Society’s newsletter when the information becomes available.
