Community Services

Monitoring community services and working to improve them

The committee has a wide-ranging brief for monitoring community services including Birmingham Airport and over-flying noise ( www.ukaccs.info/bham ), bus services, Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council's services ( www.solihull.gov.uk ) and Police matters ( www.west-midlands.police.uk/np/solihull ). Members of this committee attend meetings of several external bodies and report their findings to this committtee.

Airport

Plans for developments at Birmingham Airport and the potential impact of these plans on Knowle are monitored closely, including participating in the airport's consultative committee. Where appropriate the Society seeks wider public consultation within the village and also submits responses to consultations by the airport authorities. Specific concerns may be expressed directly to the airport or through the Society's committee.

Keeping an eye on flight paths is one activity in which members are invited to participate actively. Anything related to the flight paths, that gives cause for concern, should be reported to the Flight Path Protection Team at the Airport:

Non Emergency 0121 712 6172 for routine calls during normal office hours.

Force Control Centre 0345 113 5000 if an incident is in progress and a more immediate response is required, for example suspicious activity is observed near a flight path.

Emergency 999

How the Committee does its work

The Community Services committee has monthly meetings and its primary task is to monitor anything which could impact the village with respect to public safety, transportation, public highways and the street scene. This is mainly done by representation by members of the committee on various outside bodies. In addition local police are invited to attend its meetings so that an agreed approach to any potential problems can be discussed.

Representation on local bodies

The committee discusses areas of concern and feed back from the external bodies on which The Knowle Society is represented:
