Society talk MONDAY 16th JULY 8pm SILVERSMITHING

Silversmithing is the art of turning silver sheet metal into items for the home like tableware and candlesticks, for the church, like collection plates and more candlesticks or for personal use, like jewellery, and the Society’s July speaker is a specialist. She taught it at Stafford College for 36 years. Now, since retirement, she takes that expertise on the road, telling groups across the West Midlands about this specialist skill, crafting a precious metal into objects of beauty.

Naturally, Penny brings a variety of exquisite items  with her to illustrate the talk and invites her audience to marvel at the detail of the craft and information about those who make them.
Come and join us for Penny’s talk on 16th July at 8pm in the Village Hall, all welcome.

2018 Arden Free Tree Scheme now open!

Arden free tree portraitWe are running a ‘free tree’ initiative aimed at protecting and enhancing the rural character of Solihull in partnership with Birmingham Airport.

The Arden Free Tree Scheme promotes the planting of traditional native trees in the borough, restoring features typical of the wider local landscape whilst also reducing carbon in the atmosphere.

The scheme is open to any individuals or groups wishing to create hedgerows or small woodlands on their own land, within Solihull.

Landowners in the borough who wish to plant new hedgerows and trees can apply by sending in a location map, sketched plan and list of species. A Solihull Council Ecologist will then visit the site to discuss the plan in person, and adapt it if necessary.

Applications need to be submitted by the end of August. Proposed projects will be taken forward for selection in September, and successful applicants will then receive free trees and plants in time for the planting season (November – March).
Please note, single specimen trees cannot be supplied for gardens but groups of standards may be supplied for wood-pasture creation.
